From the Irish

“Bosphorus” you said, “meaning
The cow-ford. Bous being
As you know,
The Greek for cow”.
Your book-filled,
Wine-dark study,
Late September.
And what we had been speaking
Was all Greek.
Io and Homer and I felt
All at sea,
A Gaelic barbaros in the shade
Of a marble portico,
My brogue distorting
The music
Of the Hellenic tongue.
When what you said
Suddenly brought me back
To the by-roads and the back-roads
I grew up with,
Where a farmer’s wife
Might drive a straying heifer
Back to pasture, down a boreen.
Boreen, from the Irish
Bóther, bó being,
As I’m sure you know,
The Irish for cow.
