BERNARD O'DONOGHUE

Bernard O'Donoghue was born in Cullen, Co. Cork in 1945, and he still spends part of the year there. He now teaches Medieval English at Wadham College, Oxford. His Selected Poems was published by Faber in 2008.
Dream
In a wheelchair, just inside the door,
you looked even older and frailer,
winding your handkerchief around your wrist
as usual. I stole past, thinking
you wouldn’t notice me. But you had seen:
your hand was on my shoulder and, smiling,
you addressed me by someone else’s name.
So I asked how you were feeling, and you said,
as you always said, ‘Better than I should
at this stage of my life.’ And smiled again.
