BRIAN McMAHON

Brian McMahon poetry in Southword 18

Brian McMahon is a native of Belfast but lives now in Sligo where he works as a carpenter. He spent the last twenty years living abroad in England, Germany and Holland before returning to Ireland in 2000. Although he has been writing poetry for the last twelve years he only started to send poems out this march. He is working on a collection of poems and a novel.

Lamination: A sequence of a day

1. Gathered

The man stands

At his door in leaves

Gathering thoughts of her

Knowing she’s satisfied

Like well-water, self-gathered.

He spoke to no one

As the handle clunked

Behind his back. An awful act,

To leave a house of love.

2. Letters

Cold letters

In the box. They gather

As mice in the grain

Never at home,

Waiting to be found

Nervous hearts

Beat their breasts.

3. Grind

Ships bow

Roads turn

Rigid men stand

As erosion takes its beauty

And grinds history

From us all.

4. Dust

The dust doesn’t settle

On the brushed waters

But it lies on every slice

Of shutter

On the shop front.

He’s not here anymore.

The sandwich bar has bars

And an emaciated open sign curls up

And dies beside uncollected post. Let

Her slip away. She knows

The way home.

5. Green

My green fades to dark

And when I look again

May the darker green of night

Hold all our green

That looks upon our sleep.
