Superstition

Second Prize, 2011 Gregory O'Donoghue Competition

Nobody noticed a stray dog passing through

the village that festival day, its coat dusty,

muscles taut and lean, some old scar marks

scoring the hide, moving, not sly exactly,

more shadowy, like a rumour, as people stood

aside without being conscious of it, until days later

reports of strange howling late at night was talked

about in shady rooms, this thing, the words said,

we hardly understand, comes between us, men

and women, young and old, puts distance in meaning,

all this being retold by one generation to another

waiting for the dog to return and eat them alive.
