Choice

Bait ball is what they call a dwindling shoal of fish,

pecked from under and above,

with its safe space shifting somewhere in the middle,

not for any particular fish to find.

It could work as a suitable metaphor,

work, kids and the accessories of your busy life,

throw in your marriage for the humpback

whale, or think about the anxiety of nights.

But if you identify with the higher mammal,

you should be happy for the nutritious

plenty, the crazed offerings, the silver rain

of fish scales soothing your eyes.

But if you are water, vast and blue and deep,

you’ll host the frenzy in your midst, gently

parting for the whale, swirling with the fish,

swelling with your sweet, watery inconsequence.
