Staffordshire Treasure

Sword-hilts hand-wrought like the jewel hoard

they've lain millennium or more alongside

one epoch's weaponry pre-mass destruction

spells another's jackpot: Dawn through decade

in quest, Geiger counter turns up trumps.

'Bleep-bleepity-bleep' sings deep-stashed bling

from Mercia's king, metal murmuring

inexorably unto metal: Centuries no object,

Danegeld withheld broaches local sillion,

clay-caked filigree belatedly greets High Tech.

Good-bye DHS, state gyro-cheque’s

multiplied a myriad times, seed sown

under duress resurfaced as winner

Dark Age brilliance, the harvest home.
