The Meeting Place

I met her on a London street,

a fleeting glance

then gone.

I could have sworn she stood there

in that eccentric black coat

and brown felt hat.

In my dream she is running

towards the lake

when she becomes a swan.

And so it is,

I keep my appointments with the dead

just as I do with the living.

Our conversations are different now,

whispering through wind,

barely audible sometimes.

Or loud and unexpected,

a blue-black splash of crow

breaking the day.
