Sentinel

Sure-footed and still
under the leaves as
drops fall from above you
Steady stare into the half light
listening with winter’s ear
to the buckle and crush
of frost under cattle feet
Shot and sulphur
will not shift your purpose
As you survey all around
waiting for the crack to appear
