Châtaeu Haut Gay

(for Mathew Sweeney)

As your glowering, long-haired face,

Younger, darker than your current self,

Seeped out from the back fly-leaf

Of your latest book, Black Moon

It reminded me of half a dozen evenings

Listening to you in an upstairs room

In Douglas Street discussing Baudelaire’s

L’Âme du Vin from his Fleurs du Mal

And of the Monday afternoon

When I saw you slip into a bookies

Looking, no doubt, for the odds on some risqué

Bet, demanding payment in cases of Château Haut Gay.
