Smoke

A single woman

has a baby and we

either ignore the colour or we think

she's the prettiest

of all colours, or point

to cigarettes or offer knitted things

and read her future

as easily as leaf

through an anthology of Greek riddles

like the one that asks

who is the different-

skinned child of a mother. Answer: the one

who's a wingless bird

clever enough to fly

into such clouds as she herself who makes

eyes tidal with tears

as soon as minds take in

how she dissolves in air when she is born.
