Tattoo

for Michael O’Sullivan

Neonate, we are born dusky blue, clean-skinned

except for birthmarks, Mongolian spots, other abnormalities.

We cover up universal flesh-and-bone frailties,

adapt to light, open, heal. Do you still find

after a long bath the tiny ridges on your fingerprints shrivel?

I want to comprehend the urge to print crap ink

on the perfect nimbus of your vellum. What’s that symbol,

amulet stitched along your limb? Tell me: did you think

of falling snow as the bevel floated in the parlour air?

Did you crush your eyes before it sunk into your flesh,

making itself permanent? I want to know how you start

to mark perfection. I see you wear a heart

on your intricate sleeve. Why? I imagine the layers

peeling back, the opening of the mesh.
