Hitler's Bathtub

after a photograph of Lee Miller by David E. Scherman, April 30, 1945

Wet terrycloth wielded against knots, at the shoulder blades, rooted

where wings might have been before here, this world beholden to gravity,

to the laws of blast.  It was midnight of Mayday, it was snowing,

we were celebrating being there anyhow.

He was a man he had a tub, a toilet.  Linens, a radio.  Everything embossed

with the brutal, spinning pinwheel.  Downstairs, tenants said

he was simple, kind, unpretentious, loved children and used to come

down and fix the fires.

The camera whispers: destruction, disrepair, desire.

Miller washes the dirt of Dachau from her splendid body; the bathmat’s dark

stain vaguely continental beneath her boots.
