       Blue Backs

(A local name for Turdus pilaris: the fieldfare)

Well seasoned, these, long distance travellers

who pass in droves above, at dusk, roof height,

full quarter of an hour at least, like sleet

in easterlies beneath an angry sky.

They flap and glide in undulating flight,

and on each upward beat, reveal beneath,

tired grey-white underclothes like pallid ghosts.

Some slow to glide, a current switched, wheel round,

whizz-bang, their Gatling gun death-rattle call,

a sign the tawny owls have stirred themselves,

patrol the fields behind. A few land in

the copse across the way, their silhouettes,

against a scarlet backcloth, bleed like grace

notes, quavers, shimmering dots on silent scores.
