      Decree

Don’t let them hunt you down. There’ll be

days you’ll want to give in, let the sun

rise on a voiceless song from a tree

that feels more like a cage than a home.

There’ll be those who’ll break you indirectly,

who’ll block your flight with a lift

of their hand or stare at you insidiously

with hateful silence. There will come a shift,

sweet lark, when the world won’t seem

so closed, so blindly prejudiced.

The windows of their eyes will open

and they will see what I see which is the thrust

of all those dark days turning to light,

your grief, their heartlessness, made right.
