      'To remember me by'

(Phil Lynott 1949-1986)

Phil Lynott slept in my mother’s bed.

Yes. He really did.

But she slept on the settee.

This was in the mid-1970s

and she was a techie

for the Mayfair in Newcastle.

One night, set upon by fans,

Lynott needed a place to hide.

She said he slept two days

while she went about her life.

Full of thanks, he gave her

his one earring, a silver quaver.

Far from being the king’s evil

my mother felt it summed up

his vulnerability, a quarter bar

of some lost, unsung tune.

Yet it was something, a token,

a story to remember him by

and her choice how to pitch it.

His fear of being forgotten

made him more desperate then

than any of the fans he escaped.

He needed to want more

than be wanted by anyone.
