She covered my mind

like a spreading stain

reddening afternoon thoughts

blazing through my sheets—

diamond stud adorns her left nostril

          lyrics tattooed on her waist

her joke—allure about red heads

          cinnamon burns my tongue—

a fall evening, mahogany bar

          we meet like new flames

glass after of glass of Pinot Noir,

the straight path to her car

I confess. I barely failed to turn her

away, aim, my body, arms tried

balance, so I did not cheat the woman

I love so dearly

for another spin of Fortuna

of youth, this wide-eyed woman

peck on the cheek

an honest hug goodbye.
