Dead Friesian in Winter

Far from the cusp of the tractor

path, beside an empty creek, propped

against a pin-oak like a fireplace aslant

to the chimney of a toppled house.

Still steaming, the nose firm

glistening, the hips going. Gray

tongue thick, purple

in morning darkness, where needles of light

strike the bulk of the wrenched

head, reaching its knees to disappear

in a moving mist. The grass

a frozen crust, corn arched

and angled into a field’s naked

girders and beams, a stone wall

in wet snow where blackbirds argue.
