The Connection

It’s my first Christmas on my own again.

I’m looking under the sofa

for a bulb from the fairy lights.

Even with just one bulb missing

the set won’t work.

Under the sofa the darkness is vast

like outer space.

The sofa’s too heavy to lift on my own

and I can’t see very far under it

when I lay flat on the floor.

This is how connections are lost.

Something small

like this light bulb

disappears.

Something that seems insignificant until it’s gone.
