The Getaway

For years I loitered outside

used car lots, picking

the vehicle I’d use for my getaway.

I was drawn to an old brown Mercedes

the kind of car you could drive all night

to Donegal, to abandon on the strand

and walk away from, eyebleached

and empty, watching the sea.

I was called to the hospital

because you’d gone missing.

‘Clever man, your father’,

said the Filipino nurse.

‘He put on his clothes beneath

the blankets, when the shift

is changed he ask to go to toilet.’

You ripped out the plastic tubes

and then you just kept going,

down with the lift, through the foyer,

ducking and diving across the carpark

and out into your childhood streets.

I’m with you old man,

in the back of that taxi,

the drugs dwindling in your veins

the blood seeping down your sleeves,

as you speed down the motorway

making a break,

heading for the hills,

your Roman nose cleaving the air

like a Legion’s standard.
