       Salver

‘Go down and light a candle in the chapel,’

then tidy the graves, put a copper coin

under the little felted salver of the tongue

of each and every one of that small crowd

under the palm trees, waiting out the rain.

       Scraps

‘Would you have any spare scraps for the hounds?’

lying down panting in the kennel, tongues out,

heads on each other’s haunches like old lovers,

lifting and skittering as you approach with leftovers:

bones, skin on bones, nuggets of yesterday’s porridge.
