The Man Who Invented Blue

for Yves Klein

The beach in Nice, 1947:

you chose

the deep infinity of a mineral

sky, the avatar of blue

and a hat-box studio,

one window facing south.

You believed in the primacy

of colour and how

the inescapable honesty

of the eye is compromised

by a dog-eared family

history and an empty picture

gallery, painted white:

the still reflection

of an anterior world—no sky,

a sickly sea and yellow, idling

by the side of a winter field,

waiting for the call

that would never come.
