Proem for Well Water

after "Well Water" by Randall Jarrell

Your constant pulsing to the 24-hour cycle

of an unseen star & the bugs & spiders

& reptiles & people crawling in the caverns

in the mantle surrounding are drinking

the energy of the place. Drinking you!

as the hydrocarbons bind all around them,

performing their daily chores, devoted to

the wisdom of magma, chanting modest ohms

over tranquil breakfasts of fallen oysters

& a flounder that lost its way. Your holy

voltage quivering upward through bands

of asthenosphere & lithosphere, emanating

into the deepest trickles of the mighty

underground river winding all around

before emptying into the oceans we all know.

Your vivacious percolations bobbing in waves.

Rising w/ tireless vapor to atmosphere’s

acme, finally making some sense

of this grand, rumored sun (if only for one

solemn, yellow moment) before conjoining

to a raindrop for your return flight, plunging,

your gravity & drag to terra firma,

permeating the clay at the top of the world,

& at last locating the well water—cold, so cold!

His hands finally cupping you, his once

per morning gulping implicating himself

as the wheel turns & unwittingly extraditing

you! as a means to a means to a means to.
