Side Saddle

She sits like a mermaid in

a side saddle, a kind of

extra dish to compliment

the main. Dangerous not

to use both legs, be off

balance, tilt the horse

one way with too heavy

a burden, a sack thrown

over a hook, Pegasus with

one wing. Like a seal lunges

towards the frothy surf of

the mane. The spread thighs

saved for one occupation,

or the other where birth

stirrups come to mind. Let

her post in synch with ups,

downs, slip the soft slide

canter, shoe horns her

forward, the full throttle

gallop, her power out of

the gates, she leans into

the reins’ horizon line, pulls

the snaffle bit in the horse’s

mouth: wish boning her will.
