Mouse Throw

The aim was off, and so
the mouse’s body landed
in the fork of a sycamore tree,
was held by resinous buds.

Fur was first to go,
thinning to patches of mange;
flesh turned peat brown
and began to fall away.

Soon only a toy harmonica
of bones remained
in the tree, eye sockets
smaller than pin-holes.

Wind could not dislodge
the matchstick structure
because it whistled through
the ribcage with no resistance.

An accidental Indian burial,
the pod remained in place
until an Autumn leaf acted as a sail
and brought the little craft to earth.
