On the nature of light
after Max Richter

Light reaches the kipper clock
hung on my wall. Each tock
a note of sperm oil. Inside,
shadows, a dusty black spring,
spider floss, cogs; their solemn
teeth meshed in a long haul.
A pendulum swings behind
the hand-painted glass door –
fine sable strokes outline
the silver thatch on a turnpike
cottage, the string-thin stand
of ash, wet rocks beneath
the bridge, a grey heron frozen
in light, dark, light, dark, light.
