i.m. Joseph

The sight of him at the sink

in the back kitchen.

The stretch of his skin

as the blade slides through soap.

Him, under my mother’s feet.

Her, stepping aside, her shudder.

The black hairs on his neck

he asks me to shave.

Him as he twists, crosses,

and loops fabric,

settles his Windsor-knot,

folds up his shirt sleeves,

shrugs on his overcoat,

pats his pockets, escapes.

His tie, still knotted,

hangs in my wardrobe.
