WILLIAM RUSH

William Rush is a writer from Melbourne, Australia. He is the author of three books of poetry, most recently Into the World’s Light (Interactive Press, Queensland) 2013. His poems have been published in Australia and overseas and appeared in Poetry Salzburg Review, Orbis, Fourteen, Perehelion, Island, The Pennsylvania Review, and elsewhere.  Aware of the mystery that accompanies the poetic process, he likes Thoreau’s description of its outcome as ‘healthy speech’. William is a retired pharmacist with a theology degree.

They ask why I write poetry...

so I tell them it’s like painting and

even Vincent Van Gogh sold nothing.

I say that the blank page is a canvas

and I have tubes of words at hand.

I use my own voice like a brush.

Words have their own colors.

It depends where I dab them on the page.

It’s painful though, after hours at

a paper easel, to decide a poem will

never work, and then to throw it away

like a bloodied cut-off ear.
