Another Shade

It seemed okay, your coming round

to help me re-decorate, but now,

for the first time in a year

we’ve reached our bedroom.

Pyre-high with furniture,

the bed is draped in dust-sheets,

there’s a draught, the light-bulb swings

to a tinkle of New-Age chimes.

I’m sanding the mends in the plaster

using too much elbow-grease,

my eyes starting towards you

when you stoop to paint, your hair

hiding your face, your breasts

buried in one of my cast-off shirts.

When we stop to eat, you’re popping

grapes into your mouth, spitting the pips,

picking the skin out of your teeth.

All I can do is watch.
