Pilgrim

Midwinter, one night, my mother left her flat

in a nightie and slippers. She’d dragged lipstick

close to her mouth and combed her hair.

A paper gift bag, packed with food for the journey

dangled from her wrist (Soreen malt loaf and a tangerine).

Found face down,

my mother surrendered at the first crossing,

pleading, I want to go home, I want to go home.
