Avebury, Again

As if perspective were all, we could see,

from our hilltop vantage, how megaliths

might just be puzzle pieces; watched how the newest tourists,

oblivious to the asphalt snake that wends

round house and stone, hurried, as we had,

from figure to figure, pausing to pat each lithic

pachyderm. The deepening dusk revealed the outline

of an ancient road bed slithering through

the thick grass to an older, more distant site.

No lit torches lined the way, no green holly.

When sunlight the color of a fall apple filled

the twilight with a final flash of light, the stone circle

cast a legion of shadows that trundled off down

the dwindled lane. Our own dark dopplegangers raced after.
