Ivan's Confession

You can't expect eloquence from a murderer
    —The Brothers Karamazov

I told a roach he was ugly, even for his own

kind. Then four years of timber falling,

splitting inside my head. The moon is my

pillbox. I'm beating the walls of a humid

shack. The latch busted. A driver bobs atop

a carriage trundling across ruts. Amber light.

How could a grackle be responsible for

death by wagon wheel? Check with the garden

guitar player, the drunk sleeping in a snow bank.

I was on a train going east, counting

electric streetlamps as I went. My father

is dead. A voice told me so. It said you

did it. But I was out of town. I was a child

who leaves a ripped bit of his tongue

on a frozen ax head. I was an undigested

kernel of corn in the old man's last shit.
