Diary Entry: Light

My brother is on a bus travelling through frost and snow

perhaps in a wrong direction? He didn’t want to go, he wanted

to stay and cook dinner for his family and light the stove

and sit and listen to their stories. In the cold people behave

as if night were a criminal: no good can come of it –

but he’s fearless, he knows silence is confusing and that rivers

flow deep beneath the surface. Frozen rain flies at the bus window

and at trees huddled like children along the road. When he arrives

as he said he would, at that other destination, will he know

in the dark which way to go? Will they show him the photograph:

the one where he’s smiling surrounded by familial faces?

When the light comes, what will he do with it?
