RICHARD W. HALPERIN

eRichard W. Halperin has Irish/U.S. dual-nationality. His fourth collection for Salmon Poetry/Cliffs of Moher Catch Me While You Have the Light will shortly go into preparation and production. An abridged Japanese version of his first Salmon collection Anniversary appeared in 2012 via Kindaibungei-sha Press, Tokyo. A French translation, Présence, is the subject of an article in Translation Ireland 2017. His most recent chapbook for Lapwing Publications/Belfast is Evening Prayer, ‘dedicated to the memory and poetry of Teri Murray.’ As a volunteer, Richard records for the blind via Enregistrements à la Carte pour les Aveugles in Paris where he lives.

Far from Kilcoole

She does not want to be put in a poem.

But this evening she is so present that

Even without a thread to hang a poem on,

I push my pen forward. She stands –

I have that image; I was there –

On one side of a roadway

In the Jordan desert, not far from where

Moses struck the rock,

I on the other side with my camera.

She is in a black blouse, pink skirt,

And sandals. Behind her, a young goat,

A kid really, and infinite sand.

She is there now. She is where this poem

Wants to be. I push the pen forward,

And begin to hear the sounds that all

That sand made, that all that space made.
