Peepshow with Views of the Interior

after Samuel van Hoogstraten

I’ve gathered the ancestors round the mirror.

Parents present children.

Siblings stare.

At least one pram has been wheeled

through this hall. Navy, Silver Cross, auctioned

on eBay after the vasectomy.

Tulip buds fatten in a Belleek vase.

Original floorboards, unsanded,

unvarnished, concealed under Axminster.

A sack of chicken feed slumps

at the back door, hens have kudos now

in the suburbs.

That Barbie lunchbox has dangled

for years

from waist-level coat-hooks.

The black and white dog

chews a knuckle bone. He won’t sit

for portraits.

Weird draughts blow

up from the cellar.

Morning light from the East

is bright. We keep meaning

to repaint these faded walls.
