Week 1 & 2 – Writing and the Five Senses

This two-part workshop will explore how engaging all five senses (taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing) in a work of fiction can create an immersive and memorable experience for the reader.

WEEK 3 – Writing and the Surreal and Unreal

Stepping away from realism is a fun and interesting tool to convey feelings, situations and narratives. Learning from writers such as Kafka and Leonora Carrington, we will do exercises that suspend disbelief and bring the reader into the bizarre world of your imagination.

WEEK 4 – Wolves and Worms: Using folktales, myths and fairytales as inspiration and source material for contemporary fiction

From Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber to Pat Barker’s The Silence of the Girls, we have seen that old sources can be a wonderful well of ideas. This workshop will look at how we can adapt old stories and what we can learn from their formats and structures.
